Aso field research | More than 50 years of research

Since 1965, Vienna Japanese Studies has been dedicated to the so-called Aso Project, a research project to capture the rural culture and society of Japan in its regional variety. The aim is to critically scrutinize results of studies that have ethnographically considered individual villages or Japan as a whole and thus give readers the impression that Japanese culture and society are homgenious, and to give correct and reasonable results. Japanese researchers from the University of Vienna along with workmates are in Aso this year to further advance their research and to record any changes in recent years: (from left to right) Josef Kreiner, Wolfram Manzenreiter, Sebastian Polak-Rottman, Dionyssios Askitis und Johannes Wilhelm.
